XFP (the original serial “X” 10G Form Pluggable) optical transceiver MSA was developed in 2002 as an XFI based serial electrical follow on to the earlier Xenpak and X2 MSAs (which had quad lane XAUI electrical interfaces). Document in the SFF Committee as INF-8077, XFP with duplex LC optical connectors significantly improved port density from the duplex SC based Xenpak/X2 form factors. Because XFP mandated the use of internal CDR retimers and supported long distance as well as short reach interconnects, the thermal and physical envelope of XFP is much larger than other single lane form factors, such as SFP.
