The CFP MSA committee established CFP2 in 2013 as a miniaturization of the original 2010 dated CFP form factor. CFP2 allows the use of 10-lane or 4-lane electrical interfaces to enable 100Gb/s Ethernet and OTN optical interfaces over duplex LC or multi-lane MPO optical connectors.
A smaller variant, called CFP4, was established by the CFP MSA in 2015 to improve host back panel density. These will be listed separately in the CFP4 section.
